Louisville uses 14-3 run to end Rutgers' six-game win streak

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Angel McCoughtry scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead No. 15 Louisville to a 53-50 win over Rutgers on Sunday.

McCoughtry posted her 14th double-double of the season and the Cardinals (18-2, 4-2 Big East) closed the game with a 14-3 run to end Rutgers' five-game winning streak.

Jazz Covington added 13 points and six rebounds for Louisville, including the go-ahead layup with 32 seconds remaining that sent the Cardinals to their 17th straight home victory.

Rutgers (10-6, 5-2) had two shots in the final seconds, but Epiphanny Prince missed a layup and Matee Ajavon's 3-point attempt hit the front of the rim. Louisville's Toni Slaughter grabbed the rebound and was fouled, but missed two free throws. McCoughtry, however, chased down the rebound and made one free throw with 3.5 seconds left to seal it for the Cardinals.

Essence Carson led the Scarlet Knights with 14 points, but fouled out with 3 minutes to go. Kia Vaughn added eight points and 14 rebounds for Rutgers.

Louisville trailed 38-22 with 12:30 remaining, but the Cardinals rallied behind McCoughtry, the Big East's leading scorer and rebounder. She scored 15 points over the game's final 10 minutes, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key that gave Louisville a 50-47 lead with 2:25 left.

The Cardinals won despite shooting just 36 percent from the floor and committing 18 turnovers. Louisville made just 7-of-21 free throws.

Rutgers opened the second half on a 14-0 run, but struggled down the stretch. The Scarlet Knights shot 35 percent from the floor and turned it over 17 times.
