DeHaan (16 points, 7 blocks) leads Spartans past Iowa

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Allyssa DeHaan scored 16 points and had seven blocks to lead No. 23 Michigan State past Iowa 67-57, the second straight Sunday in which the Spartans beat the Hawkeyes.

DeHaan, a 6-foot-9 freshman, was 8-for-13 from the field and nearly doubled her average of 4.5 blocks, tops in the Big Ten and second in the nation.

Aisha Jefferson and Mia Johnson each had 10 points for the Spartans (15-4, 6-1 Big Ten), while season scoring leader Victoria Lucas-Perry overcame a 4-for-15 shooting day to grab nine rebounds.

Lucas-Perry's eight points also gave her 1,002 for her career and made her the 18th player in school history to reach 1,000.

Kristi Smith and Krista VandeVenter each had 13 points for the Hawkeyes (11-9, 3-4). Smith, a 5-6 point guard, also led her team in rebounds with seven.

Michigan State went ahead to stay on Lucas-Perry's putback in the final seconds of the first half, then built a double-digit lead by turning up the pressure on defense and going inside to DeHaan on offense.

Iowa never mounted a serious threat in the last 15 minutes but was much more competitive than in an 83-63 loss to the Spartans last week in Iowa City.
