Red-hot Rutgers ends four-game Marquette win streak

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Essence Carson scored a career-high 25 points to lead Rutgers (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 23 AP) to a 66-56 win over Marquette (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 16 AP) on Tuesday night.

Kia Vaughn scored 10 of her 14 points down the stretch for Rutgers (13-6, 6-2 Big East), which defeated its second straight ranked opponent while snapping a four-game winning streak by Marquette (19-3, 7-2).

The Scarlet Knights, who got 15 points from Epiphanny Prince, have won eight of nine and 11 of 13. Vaughn added nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Krystal Ellis, Marquette's leading scorer with an 18.9 average, was held to 12 points on 4-for-18 shooting.

Christina Quaye led the Golden Eagles with 14 points, and Efueko Osagie-Laqndry had 11.

The 56 points was Marquette's lowest total of the season, the sixth time in the last nine games Rutgers has held a team to its season-low this year.

The Scarlet Knights led for the entire game, and held a 48-34 advantage with 12:42 remaining. Marquette cut it to 50-44 before Vaughn scored eight points to extend the lead to nine. Rutgers sealed it by going 8-for-8 from the line in the final 1:59.
