PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Essence Carson scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures and help Rutgers (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today; No. 23 AP) rout Cincinnati 85-43 on Saturday.
Kia Vaughn added 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots and Epiphanny Prince had 16 points and four steals for Rutgers (14-6, 7-2 Big East), which has won four straight games and 12 of its last 14.Heather Zurich and Matee Ajavon, who had six assists, each scored 11 as all five Rutgers starters reached double figures for the first time this season.Emy Ogide led Cincinnati (12-10, 3-7) with 14, as the Bearcats lost their third straight, all to ranked teams. It was Cincinnati's lowest point total since a 64-40 loss at Villanova, Feb. 11, 2006.With a game at No. 7 Connecticut coming up Tuesday, the Scarlet Knights showed no signs of looking ahead to the first-place Huskies or underestimating Cincinnati, which put a scare in UConn last Tuesday.Rutgers shot 63.5 percent and had its largest winning margin since beating Rider by 48 on Nov. 20, 2004.With the score 5-5, Rutgers went on a 12-2 run to open a 10-point lead. The game's decisive stretch started with 10:33 remaining and the Knights holding a 19-11 lead. Prince hit a 3-pointer that started Rutgers on a 22-2 run that opened a 41-13 advantage with 3:11 left in the half.Rutgers shot 9-for-12 during the run, getting nine points apiece from Prince and Ajavon. During the same period, Cincinnati shot 1-4 with seven turnovers.The Bearcats had just one basket over the final 10:53 and trailed 45-18 at halftime.The Knights added to their advantage after intermission, taking their largest lead at 79-36 with under 3 minutes left.
