No. 9 George Washington grabs 17th straight victory

    Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Sarah-Jo Lawrence and ninth-ranked George Washington didn't get caught looking ahead.

Lawrence and Jessica Adair each scored 16 points to lead No. 9 George Washington to its 17th straight victory, 87-60 over Saint Joseph's on Friday, tying them with Temple for the Atlantic 10 lead going into Sunday's game against the Owls.

"They beat us last year in the championship. We're kind of mad about that -- still," Lawrence said.

The 87 points were a season high for George Washington (24-2, 13-0 Atlantic 10) and the most allowed by Saint Joseph's.

Erica Pollock and Ayanha Cornish led the Hawks with 10 points. Pollock also had 10 rebounds.

Lawrence had 12 of her 16 points in the first half, when George Washington raced to a 38-14 lead with 4:12 remaining.

"I wanted to make a statement early," George Washington coach Joe McKeown said. "I thought we did a great job at turning them over and running."

Even though St. Joseph's (15-12, 7-6), which had 20 turnovers, scored the final 12 points of the half to cut the Colonials' lead to 38-26, the Hawks were unable to get within 10 points in the second half.

"I'm disappointed in the way we started the game. We never recovered. Everything we tried to do, they came back at us," Saint Joseph's coach Cindy Griffin said.
