COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Marscilla Packer scored 26 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead No. 16 Ohio State to a 63-57 win over Marist, the team that ended the Buckeyes' NCAA tournament hopes last season.
Ohio State (1-0) jumped to an early 18-point lead, then held off Marist's late rally that saw the Red Foxes (0-1) close to within two with 1:46 left.
Packer hit a 3-pointer to make it 61-54 with 36 seconds left, then added two free throws nine seconds later.
Marist upset the Buckeyes 67-63 in the first round of the NCAA tournament in March.
Freshman center Jantel Lavender had 13 points and 14 rebounds for Ohio State, which lost three-time Big Ten player of the year Jessica Davenport and two other seniors from last year's squad.
Erica Allenspach and Lynzee Johnson, two of six Ohioans on the Marist roster, each had 12 points.
