Tough defense key as Ohio State shuts down Southern

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Star Allen scored 17 points and Marscilla Packer added 16 to lead Ohio State (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) to a 79-38 win over Southern on Monday night.

Allen, who averaged 6.3 points in her first three games, made 8 of 10 field goals.

The Buckeyes (4-0) made seven of their first nine shots, including all four 3-point attempts, for an 18-6 lead in the opening 4 minutes and then relied on defense to put the game away.

Ohio State, which also got 11 points from Jantel Lavender, shot 50.8 percent overall, while Southern (0-2) shot 27.8 percent.
