Cheek's double-double lifts Duke past Houston

HOUSTON (AP) -- Joy Cheek had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Duke (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) past Houston 84-68 on Friday.

Cheek scored eight points during a 16-0 Duke run that spanned both halves and turned a close game into a 49-27 lead with 19 minutes remaining. Duke (10-3) never led by fewer than 13 after that.

Chante Black added 12 points and Jasmine Thomas 11 for Duke.

Twiggy McIntyre led Houston (5-8) with 13 points. Tye Jackson had 12 points and nine assists but also had seven of Houston's 20 turnovers.

Duke outrebounded Houston 48-25 and held the Cougars to 36 percent shooting.

Houston led 22-20 after two free throws by Courtney Taylor with 7:02 left in the first half, but Duke went on an 11-0 run for a 31-22 lead less than four minutes later. Wanisha Smith scored the first four points, and Thomas added three during the spurt.
