JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Stanford Speech scored a driving layup at the buzzer that lifted Mississippi Valley State to a 74-73 victory over Jackson State on Saturday.
Speech scored 17 points in the game, and Valley (12-15, 10-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) won its fourth straight and beat Jackson State for the second time this season.
The Delta Devils also moved ahead of Jackson State for second place in the conference with three games remaining.
Valley took an early 18-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game and was ahead 38-34 at halftime thanks to 52 percent shooting from the floor.
The Delta Devils stretched the lead to 46-38 with 16:49 to play before Jackson State mounted a comeback.
Jackson State (11-17, 9-6) took its first lead of the game at 57-55 on a 3-pointer from Catraiva Givens with 10:38 remaining. Givens layup with 9.2 seconds left gave Jackson State a 73-72 lead. But that's when Speech drove the ball in for his buzzer-beating layup.
Michael Clark scored 15 points for MVSU, Dwayne Harmason added 13 and Carl Lucas chipped in 10. Grant Maxey led Jackson State with 21 points, Darrion Griffins and Givens each scored 14.
