ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Jessica Minnfield scored 14 points for Michigan, which handed Vanderbilt (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) its first loss of the season Sunday, 50-42.
Carly Benson had 10 and Stephany Skrba added eight for the Wolverines (2-2), who beat a ranked opponent for the first time since Feb. 29, 2004.Hannah Tuomi scored 10 points for the Commodores, who lost for the first time in five games this season. Teammate Jessica Moody added nine.Michigan led 21-15 at halftime and held a comfortable lead for most of the second half.Tuomi's basket off a rebound brought the Commodores within 44-40 with 2:40 left, but a free throw by Courtney Boylan and two by Minnfield made it 47-40 with 1:45 left.The Wolverines took their first lead, 14-13, on Benson's 3-pointer with 6:26 left before halftime.Vanderbilt was picked to win the SEC this season.
