Baylor beats Iowa State for eighth straight victory

    Associated Press

WACO, Texas -- Danielle Wilson and fifth-ranked Baylor were consistent. That was too much for Iowa State to overcome even when the Cyclones finally started making shots.

Wilson had eight of her 18 points in a game-turning run before halftime and then had three blocks and a strong offensive play to end No. 20 Iowa State's second-half surge in the Lady Bears' 68-57 victory Wednesday night for their eighth straight victory.

"I expect that every night. I know her teammates expect it," coach Kim Mulkey said. "She is just playing as good of basketball as we have in the league right now."

Baylor (14-1, 2-0 Big 12) used a 21-2 spurt over a 10-minute span in the first half to erase an early deficit and take control of the game.

Iowa State (13-3, 1-1), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped, hit 10-of-16 3-pointers in the second half after making only two before the break. But the Cyclones never got closer than nine points, and when they did Wilson responded right away.

When the Cyclones got within 57-48 on Heather Ezell's 3-pointer with six minutes left, Wilson quickly restored the double-digit lead. She had an offensive rebound and putback basket at the other end while being fouled to seal the win for Baylor. (She missed the free throw, but that can be forgiven).

"We knew how good she was, but I think she is better in person," Cyclones coach Bill Fennelly said. "She is tough to guard. She got to the free-throw line, she got rebounds, she blocked shots. ... We tried to double team her at times, but she was very hard for us to handle. She impacted the game at both ends of the floor."

Along with her 18 points, Wilson finished with 10 rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals.

Kelsey Bolte had 20 points and nine rebounds for Iowa State, with 17 points and five 3-pointers after halftime. Ezell finished with 11 points and eight turnovers.

Jessica Morrow had 15 points for Baylor, and Rachel Allison had 13.

The Cyclones' winning streak included victories over No. 18 Vanderbilt and No. 22 Oklahoma State. But that entire streak came at home since their last road game, a 20-point loss at Iowa on Dec. 7.

Iowa State led 3-0 when Ezell hit a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the game. She didn't score again before halftime but still matched Bolte as the Cyclones' leading first-half scorers.

Nicky Weiben's jumper made it 9-5 with 13:24 left, but exactly 10 minutes later when Bolte hit a 3-pointer for her only points before halftime, the Cyclones trailed 26-14. They were 1-of-13 shooting with eight turnovers during that span.

Baylor started that run with 12 consecutive points, going ahead to stay when Melissa Jones made a long jumper with 10:52 left to make it 10-9.

Baylor led 32-15 at halftime and opened the scoring on Allison's jumper. Iowa State then hit four 3-pointers in a 12-1 run to close to 36-27 after Bolte's second 3 in the spurt.

"We came out with a mindset that we needed to keep playing hard," Bolte said.

"I was really pleased with our effort in the second half," Fennelly said. "We had some good looks at the 3 and we made them. It kept us in the game and gave Baylor something to worry about a little bit."
