Musketeers stifle La Salle, keep another opponent under 50 points

CINCINNATI -- Junior guard Dee Dee Jernigan had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double, and Xavier (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) relied on its defense and rebounding to get its 14th straight victory Wednesday, 72-42 over La Salle.

The Musketeers (23-4, 11-0 Atlantic 10) extended the second-longest winning streak in school history and their best start in A-10 play. They dominated in rebounding 40-22 and never let La Salle (10-16, 1-10) get any traction on offense. La Salle was the 15th Xavier opponent that failed to reach the 50-point mark this season.

Xavier opened the game with an 8-0 lead that was never seriously threatened. The nation's toughest field-goal defense clamped down, holding La Salle to 31.9 percent shooting.

The Explorers rely on the 3-pointer more than any team in the Atlantic 10, and set a school record Wednesday with their 170th of the season.
