LOS ANGELES -- Amber Harris had 19 points and 12 rebounds as Xavier (No. 15 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) defeated Southern California 81-71 in overtime Friday in both teams' season opener.
Xavier scored eight unanswered points to start the extra period, outscoring USC 17-7 in overtime.
Ta'Shia Phillips, last season's Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year, finished with 14 points, including five in overtime, and 11 rebounds for Xavier. Teammate April Phillips had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Ashley Corral had a career-high 25 points for USC, and Briana Gilbreath, the Pac-10 freshman of the year last season, added 19.
With Xavier leading 64-62, Corral picked off a pass and scored on a lay-up with 30.9 seconds left to tie it.
The game marked the debut of new USC head coach Michael Cooper, who spent the previous eight seasons coaching the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.
