NASSAU, Bahamas -- Kayla Alexander had 23 points and 10 rebounds to help Syracuse (No. 23 AP) beat Clemson 77-58 on Wednesday night in the finale of the Sunshine Shootout.
Iasia Hemingway added a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Orange (9-1), who were coming off their first loss of the season to No. 2 Baylor on Tuesday night."I was happy with how we responded," Syracuse coach Quentin Hillsman said. "Sometimes after a game like we had yesterday with Baylor it is hard to respond. Our older kids really responded and played a tough game. I was happy with how they came out and left everything on the floor."Syracuse scored the first six points before Clemson (6-7) went on a 15-0 run. That seem to wake the Orange up as Alexander had nine points during a 21-5 spurt that gave them a 28-20 lead with 7:02 left in the half.The Orange closed the half on a 16-5 burst to lead 44-25 at the break. Syracuse extended its advantage to 24 midway through the second half.Elashier Hall had a career-high 16 points for Syracuse and Carmen Tyson-Thomas added 11.Sthefany Thomas scored 17 points and Kirstyn Wright added 14 for Clemson."It was good for our team to play this caliber of teams in the tournament," said Itoro Coleman, who is in her first season as Clemson's head coach. "We strive to be the best and play the best. Syracuse is a really good team. They did a good job of pushing the ball, and their 2-3 zone is tough, and they did a good job of knocking in some shots."
