North Carolina routs Virginia Tech to cap sweep

    Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Italee Lucas scored 19 points to help North Carolina (No. 14 ESPN/USA Today, No. 15 AP) beat Virginia Tech 76-51 on Sunday.

Laura Broomfield and Waltiea Rolle each had double-doubles for the Tar Heels (19-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who shot 47 percent and pulled away in the second half to sweep the two Virginia-based ACC schools this weekend.

The Tar Heels also improved to 8-0 all-time against Virginia Tech (9-12, 0-7) in Chapel Hill.

Broomfield had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Rolle had 12 points and 11 boards. Cetera DeGraffenreid added 14 points and six assists.

"I thought we had great balance, which is what I like with this team," North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "We keep talking about how we play for each other and how it's about what we can give, not what we can get."

Alyssa Fenyn scored 11 points to lead the Hokies.

The Tar Heels led 39-31 at the break but opened the second half on a 17-6 run, ending with Cetera DeGraffenreid's jumper to make it 56-37 with about 12 minutes left. The Hokies were within 14 points with 8 minutes left before the Tar Heels essentially closed it out with a 13-0 run, which included three baskets from Broomfield and a 3-pointer from Lucas to make it 74-47 with 3:10 left.

"I thought we played a very solid first half," Virginia Tech coach Beth Dunkenberger said. "In the second half, we started with a few turnovers and they ended up running on us in transition and built a lead, and we really couldn't quite climb back in it."

North Carolina once again was without Jessica Breland, who missed her third straight game following arthroscopic knee surgery little over a week ago. Despite her absence, the Tar Heels held a 49-32 rebounding advantage.
