Tatiyiana McMorris, Marquette top Seton Hall for fifth win in past six

    Associated Press

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Tatiyiana McMorris usually gets nervous when she plays in front of family and friends.

The Marquette senior guard, who is from the Bronx, wanted to put on a good show for her relatives who made the short trip to New Jersey to see her face Seton Hall on Wednesday night.

"Whenever I play in front of family, I feel like I have to play for them and put on a show for them," McMorris said.

McMorris did well as she led four scorers in double figures with 17 points and Marquette (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) earned a 66-58 victory over Seton Hall.

"I didn't want to be distracted because everyone was there," McMorris said. "It's always a great feeling to play in front of my friends and family. I just tried to let the game come to me and not try to do too much."

McMorris hit three 3-pointers over the final 5:50 of the first half, keying a 19-5 run that enabled the Golden Eagles (20-5, 8-4 Big East) to win for the fifth time in the past six games. McMorris had 11 points during that stretch.

"I really was confident going into this game," McMorris said. "My teammates found me and I had to knock down the shots."

Marquette coach Terri Mitchell was impressed with the way McMorris played.

"She's mentally tough and wants the ball in her hands," Mitchell said. "When she hit those shots, it was so huge. She was poised and focused tonight. In that run, we got the ball to Taty and she took advantage of her chances."

"It wasn't good for us to go to the locker room down 14 at the half," said Seton Hall coach Anne Donovan, whose team fell to 8-17 overall and 1-11 in the Big East and lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

"It was tough to come back from that."

Angel Robinson, who finished with 15 points, gave Marquette the lead at 17-15 at 8:02 with a steal and a layup.

McMorris hit three 3-pointers over the last 5:50 and had 11 points during that stretch to pace the run.

Jasmine Collins finished with 14 points and Sarina Simmons added 12 points for Marquette.

Jasmine Crew scored 20 points to pace Seton Hall. Jazzmine Johnson and Whitney Wood each added 10 points for Seton Hall, with Wood grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

"We took better care of the ball in the second half and our whole mentality was better," Donovan said. "But we just couldn't get closer to them."

Mitchell liked her team's balanced scoring.

"We've been doing that all year long," Mitchell said. "I don't feel like we have any superstars. In the second half, we just relaxed and waited for the game to end and you can't play that way in the Big East. We didn't play with any focus and Seton Hall took advantage of that."
