South Carolina 62, Mississippi 50

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ieasia Walker scored 15 points to lead fifth-seeded South Carolina in a 62-50 win against 12th-seeded Mississippi on Thursday in the Southeastern Conference tournament's first round.

The Gamecocks (17-13) will face fourth-seeded Georgia in Friday's quarterfinals after splitting a pair of regular season meetings with the Lady Bulldogs.

South Carolina's Courtney Newton and Markeshia Grant hit back-to-back 3s to break a tie with Mississippi. Ashley Bruner followed with a jumper to give the Gamecocks a 12-4 advantage with 14:25 in the first half, and South Carolina never relinquished the lead.

Mississippi's Kenyotta Jenkins hit a layup to cut the margin to 40-37 with 12:42 to play, but it was as close as the Rebels would get.

South Carolina shot 43.1 percent and held Mississippi (10-19) to 26.9 percent. Valencia McFarland led the Rebels with 14 points.
