Green Bay jumps out early against Loyola, wins 21st in row

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Wisconsin-Green Bay isn't going to make it easy on any team hoping to beat the Phoenix in the Horizon League tournament.

    Especially at home.

Celeste Hoewisch scored 19 of her 23 points in the first half and the Phoenix (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) continued their home-court dominance with an 89-41 rout of Loyola of Chicago on Wednesday night.

"We came out focused and ready to go, and that's what you want to be doing, especially at this time of the year," said Hoewisch, who outscored the entire Ramblers team 19-16 in the first half.

"I feel like everybody took their turn setting the tone for the team," she added.

Wisconsin-Green Bay (30-1) won its 21st straight and improved to 15-0 at home this season, and this one was never in doubt. The Phoenix jumped out to leads of 11-0 and 23-2 to make it a laugher early.

"The start of the game, we were a little bit tight," Phoenix coach Matt Bollant said. "You could see us missing a couple open shots, but defensively we played really hard. We were solid defensively. We didn't let them get going or get any kind of confidence and then once we started making shots, everything changed.

"We did what we wanted them to do. They came ready to go, and give our players a lot of credit for being on edge and being focused."

The 30th win for the Phoenix set a season record for the 38-year-old program -- not bad for a team coming off its 13th consecutive league championship.

"I think it's really special," Hoewisch said. "I think you appreciate those kind of records more at the end of the season, more at the end of my career. But it's big. There's been some pretty good teams here and to be the first team to make it to 30 wins is definitely very special and I think says a lot about how special this team is."

Sarah Eichler scored 15 points, one shy of a season high, while Julie Wojta added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Lydia Bauer scored 11 off the bench.

Gabby Micek scored eight points to lead Loyola (12-19).

Green Bay, the Horizon's top seed and undefeated regular-season champ, will host No. 4 seed Wright State in a semifinal game Friday night.
