Lucas scores 20 to steer No. 18 Penn State over Virginia Tech

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Maggie Lucas scored 20 points to help Penn State (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) cruise to a 66-28 victory over Virginia Tech on Tuesday night.

Nikki Greene added 14 points for the Nittany Lions (7-2) and Alex Bentley had 11 to reach 1,000 for her career.

Aerial Wilson had 10 points to lead Virginia Tech (2-6), which was held scoreless over the final 13:15.

"(Penn State) didn't even play their best tonight," Virginia Tech coach Dennis Wolff said. "We have limitations right now so we're going to have trouble scoring, especially if our guards struggle like they did tonight."

Penn State used a 14-0 run midway through the first half to pull away.

Then, leading 27-15 at halftime, the Nittany Lions used their size advantage to maintain control. Greene, a 6-foot-4 center, scored 12 points in the second half -- most in the paint.

The Hokies shot 12 of 51 (24 percent) from the field for their worst offensive output of the season. Virginia Tech also set a new school record for fewest points scored in a game.

The teams combined to start 2 of 15 (13 percent) from the field. Penn State picked it up from there, especially in the second half as the Lady Lions shot 71 percent (15 of 21) after the break.

"To start the game, it wasn't at our usual pace," Penn State coach Coquese Washington said.

Washington attributed the slow start to her team adjusting to a man-to-man defense. The Lady Lions usually play zone, but made the switch to slow down the Hokies' guards.

"Playing a lot of man-to-man, it wears on you," Washington said. "So I think there was some fatigue early in the game. But then we got a second wind."

Penn State outscored Virginia Tech 39-13 in the second half.
