Chay Shegog, Candace Wood lead UNC to win over NC State

    Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Chay Shegog scored 16 points to help North Carolina (No. 24 AP) beat North Carolina State 60-50 on Sunday.

Candace Wood added 15 points for the Tar Heels (14-5, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won their second straight game to cap a week that began with the worst loss in program history, at Connecticut. North Carolina shot 42 percent but did its best work in frustrating the Wolfpack offense all afternoon, holding NC State to three field goals in the final 10½ minutes to finally take control.

Marissa Kastanek scored 20 points for the Wolfpack (13-7, 3-4), who shot just 28 percent from the floor and 8 for 29 from 3-point range. NC State had won three straight league games coming in but fell to the Tar Heels for the 20th time in 24 meetings.

Kody Burke finished with 10 and was the only other NC State player to reach double figures.

North Carolina's offense has struggled compared to its high-scoring teams of recent years, including a 47-point performance in a loss to Clemson followed by a program-worst 35 in Monday's 51-point loss to the Huskies.

The Tar Heels regrouped by winning at Virginia Tech to give coach Sylvia Hatchell her 600th win with the program, but they scored just 56 in that one.

The shots weren't falling much better against NC State, but the defense made up for that by shutting down an offense that came in averaging about 71 points per game.

NC State led by six in the first half and was tied at halftime despite its poor shooting. But the Tar Heels used a 12-3 run to finally take advantage of all those missed shots from the Wolfpack, turning a 43-41 lead into a 55-44 margin with about a minute left.

During that stretch, NC State managed just one field goal -- a 3-pointer from Myisha Goodwin-Coleman with about 6:38 left -- as the Tar Heels began to pull away. The Wolfpack missed 16 of 19 shots to close the game, with two of the makes being desperation 3-pointers from Kastanek in the final 45 seconds after the Tar Heels' clinching run.
