NEW YORK -- Yankees catcher Jorge Posada had improved enough to pinch hit against the White Sox on Friday night.

Before the game, manager Joe Girardi said that his catcher was on track to play after being hit by a pitch on Wednesday.

"He's moving in the right direction," Girardi said of Posada, who missed Thursday's game in Baltimore.

"I could've played tonight," Posada said Friday, "but Joe wanted to give me an extra day."

Francisco Cervelli started at catcher for the second night in a row. He went 1-for-4 during Thursday night's 4-0 victory.

Posada was hit by a Jeremy Guthrie pitch in the top of the second inning on Wednesday night and suffered a right knee contusion. Posada left the game in the bottom of the inning.

Posada pinch hit in the seventh for Nick Johnson after Derek Jeter had tripled to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead. He struck out.
