New York Mets backup catcher Henry Blanco has been placed on the bereavement list.

The move was made so Blanco could be with his ailing mother in Venezuela.

Josh Thole was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Monday's game in Washington. Thole hit .203 (16-for-79) with seven runs scored, eight doubles, one triple and 10 RBIs in 21 games for the Bisons.

Manager Jerry Manuel did not say how long Blanco will be out but he must miss a minimum of three days and can be on the list for up to seven days. That means Blanco at least will skip the three-game series against the Nationals.

Manuel says Thole might start Wednesday's day game depending on how Rod Barajas is feeling. Barajas injured his left index finger when his glove was hit by a swing on Friday and was given Saturday off.
