Mets may shut down Maine

NEW YORK -- New York Mets right-hander John Maine will be evaluated in New York early this week and is unlikely to continue with his rehab assignment in the minor leagues, general manager Omar Minaya said on Sunday.

"Most likely not," Minaya said about letting Maine make another minor league start. "First, let's evaluate him, and go from there."

Maine allowed one run, unearned, on one hit and three walks while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday against Indianapolis. Minaya said Maine, who was placed on the disabled list on May 21 with right shoulder tendinitis, would be given time to rest and/or heal, if that's possible.

"He said he just didn't feel the way he wants to feel -- the throwing area," Minaya said, referring to the shoulder.

The 29-year-old Maine is earning $3.3 million this season, and is likely to be nontendered by the Mets in December. He may have thrown his last pitch with the organization because of his continuing shoulder issues.
