"This is not permanent, but this is what we are doing now," Girardi said.
"There might be something else we do," Girardi said.
The Yankees also have an innings limit on Phil Hughes. Hughes has thrown 149 2/3 innings and it is believed the limit is around 175, so Girardi could skip Hughes at some point.
Vazquez pitched a very efficient 4 2/3 relief innings Monday night to pick up his 10th win. Vazquez gave up just one run on two hits. He entered for Moseley in the fifth inning with two men on and one out and escaped unharmed. All night, his stuff had more zip than it did at any time over the past month. Vazquez even touched 90 mph on the radar gun, which is something he had not done recently.
In his seven starts before being demoted to the bullpen, Vazquez had a 6.69 ERA and hitters batted .327 against him. Vazquez has been removed and re-inserted to the rotation twice this season.
The Yankees also activated Lance Berkman from the DL. Their September call-ups are reliever Jonathan Albaladejo, outfielder Greg Golson and catcher Chad Moeller. Damaso Marte was transferred to the 60-day DL.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi is returning Javier Vazquez to the starting rotation. Vazquez will start Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
