One stayed in the Bronx after winning five rings, the other decided he didn't need the Big Apple at all to grab a title.
Could New Yorkers have any more reason to love one guy -- and loathe the other?
Apparently not. Derek Jeter, who re-upped with the Yankees this winter, ensuring he'll remain The Captain for at least another three years and notch his 3,000th hit in pinstripes, has been voted the Big Apple's most loved sports figure of 2010 by ESPNNewYork.com readers. Meanwhile, LeBron James, who broke the hearts of Knicks fans on national TV to sign with the Miami Heat, has grabbed the dubious honor of most loathed.
As of Thursday evening, Jeter had grabbed 30 percent of the first-place votes for most loved, edging Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who reeled in 22 percent. Bombers closer Mariano Rivera had fewer first-place votes than The Boss, but came in second overall to Jeter on points.
James dominated the most loathed poll, landing 51 percent of the first-place votes. Ex-Knicks GM Isiah Thomas finished a distant second in points.
