NEW YORK -- New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left Wednesday night's 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox with a sore right shoulder after the completion of the top of the eighth inning. Eric Chavez pinch-hit for Teixeira in the bottom half of the frame, and took over at first in the ninth.

Teixeira said it's "nothing serious," but he will continue to receive treatment before Thursday night's game and decide whether or not he'll play afterward.

Teixeira initially suffered the injury in the top of the third inning during Tuesday night's game when he dove for a ball hit by third baseman Brent Morel and jammed his shoulder. However, Teixeira stayed in that game, and got through three at-bats Wednesday night before the soreness became too much to handle.

"When I took BP today and it was sore," said Teixeira, who went 1-for-3 at the plate with a strikeout. "I just said, 'Hey, let me try to go [play through it].' I did some treatment today, and after my third at-bat, it was just really sore again, so ]manager] Joe [Girardi] and I decided not to push it.

"The doc looked at it and there's no real concern, but it's sore."

"It kind of bothered him," Girardi said.

Teixeira said he wasn't sure if he would've played through the soreness, assuming the game had greater implications.

"The thing is, I don't know how effective I would've been," Teixeira said. "The third at-bat I got a hit, but it was a changeup and I got out in front. It was hurting, so I don't know how effective I would've been in my next at-bat."

Teixeira said he's not worried because "it's not a sharpshooting pain. It's just achy and stiff."

In 21 games this season, Teixeira is batting .247 with six home runs and 16 RBIs.
