NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter is 10 hits away from becoming the 28th member of the 3,000 hit club.

Jeter lined a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning off Boston Red Sox starter Josh Beckett early Friday morning, his 2,990th career hit.

If Jeter reaches 3,000, he will be the first player to do so in Yankee pinstripes. If he reaches the milestone over the next three weeks, he will be the fourth youngest player to 3,000.

Jeter said earlier this week that he would "love" to get his 3,000th hit at home.

To do so on this homestand, he needs 10 hits in the Yankees' next seven games.

On the season, the 16-year veteran is hitting .261.

He ranks 28th on baseball's all-time hits list, 10 behind Roberto Clemente.
