NEW YORK -- Brian Cashman interrupted your regularly scheduled Jose Reyes lovefest Friday night with a sobering reminder that the New York Mets do not, in fact, have the best player on the Subway Series field.

Told that Reyes' presence might represent the first time since interleague play began in 1997 that a Mets star trumped every big name on the New York Yankees roster, Cashman said, "I don't know if he's the best player. He's the most electric and is having the best year, but you've got to look at consistency.

"Robinson Cano is the best player on the field."

As Alex Rodriguez all but tripped over himself in praise of the Mets' shortstop, whom A-Rod called "the world's greatest player," Cashman went with Cano's recent career over Reyes'.

"It's amazing how athletic [Reyes] is," the Yankees general manager said. "It's a pleasure to watch from afar, but I don't want to see it up close the next three days. For April, May and June, yeah he's definitely having the best season.

"But Cano's probably the premier player at his position in baseball, and he's done it consistently now for two or three years."

Asked whom he would take with the first three picks in an open draft of Mets and Yanks position players, Cashman said, "Robinson Cano first. Jose Reyes. Alex Rodriguez."
