NEW YORK -- Manhattan College has hired Louisville assistant Steve Masiello as its men's basketball coach.

Masiello replaces Barry Rohrssen, who was fired after the Jaspers went 6-25 and were 59-85 overall in his five seasons with the school.

"I am honored and humbled to be the next coach of Manhattan College," Masiello said in a statement. "I am eager to lead the Jaspers back to prominence as being a premier program in the conference, and re-establishing our rich tradition and winning history."

Masiello was an assistant at Manhattan from 2001-05 and helped them reach the NCAA tournament twice and the NIT once before leaving to work under Cardinals coach Rick Pitino.

"Steve has been a tireless worker in his six years at Louisville," Pitino said. "I've seen him grow from a ball boy with the New York Knicks to an outstanding teacher of the game. I'm real proud of his efforts and I know he will do an unbelievable job turning Manhattan back into a winner."

Manhattan's new coach played at Kentucky under both Pitino and Tubby Smith. During his career, the Wildcats went the Final Four twice and won the national title in 1998.

"Steve is a winner who has had success at each of his previous coaching stops and during his collegiate playing career at Kentucky," said Manhattan director of athletics Bob Byrnes. "We are extremely fortunate to hire a well-respected, highly experienced coach who is familiar with building a winning tradition here at Manhattan College from his days as an assistant."
