NEWARK, N.J. -- Freshman forward Fuquan Edwin continued his fine play of late, scoring 14 points to pace a balanced scoring attack, leading Seton Hall to an easy 68-45 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Sunday night.
It was the third straight game that Edwin reached double figures in scoring for the Pirates (6-4). He is averaging 14.7 points in those three games, all victories.The Pirates took the lead for good on a jumper by Ferrakohn Hall with 14:18 left in the first half and never looked back. They led by eight (32-24) at halftime, then scored the first 13 points of the second half to go ahead 45-24 with 15:59 remaining.The Pirates also received 10 points and seven rebounds from Jeff Robinson.NJIT (2-6) was led by P.J. Miller, who had 10 points.NJIT led only once, 2-0, and tied only once at 12-12. The Pirates took the lead for good on a jumper from Ferrakohn Hall with 14:18 left to go in the first half at 14-12 and never looked back.The Pirates survived some sloppy moments in the first half, but put some distance between themselves and the Highlanders when they scored eight straight points in the closing minutes of the first half, keyed by the play of two freshmen.Edwin scored on a lane jumper, then fellow frosh Patrik Auda scored four straight points on inside baskets, with Edwin capping the run with a driving layup, pushing the Pirates' lead to double figures at 32-18 with 3:07 left in the first half.NJIT sliced the lead to 32-24 at halftime on consecutive 3-pointers from Isaiah Wilkerson and Chris Flores.But the 13-0 run to start the second half put the game away for the Pirates, as Jamel Jackson canned two 3-pointers during the run. The Pirates gradually pulled away and led by as many as 26 (58-32 with 6:18 left).The Pirates, already undermanned with the broken wrist suffered by leading scorer Jeremy Hazell two weeks ago, played without senior forward Herb Pope, who had an undisclosed left foot injury. There is no timetable for Pope's return or whether he will able to play Wednesday against Dayton.
