Mets' K-Rod tends to family matter

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has left the team to attend to family issues in Venezuela.

The pitcher's brother was in a serious car accident, but he is expected to be fine, sources close to Rodriguez told ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin on Thursday.

New York general manager Omar Minaya said that he expects the right-hander to be back with the team by Opening Day. Sources confirmed that Rodriguez plans to return to New York on Sunday.

Rodriguez's spring training got off to a slow start when he was sidelined by pink eye.

In his first season with the Mets last year, K-Rod was 3-6 with a 3.71 ERA and 35 saves.
