EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants signed safety Chad Jones, the first of their 2010 draft picks, on Friday.

The Giants announced late in the afternoon that Jones signed a deal and that the team also waived kicker Sam Swank to make room for Jones on the 80-man roster.

The Giants drafted the 6-2, 221-pound safety out of LSU in the third round. Jones was one of three safeties the Giants added in the offseason to upgrade the position. With Kenny Phillips still recovering from knee surgery, the Giants added Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant. They then drafted Jones, a former two-sport star who also played baseball at LSU. Coaches still want to see the athletic Jones, who could also become a special teams contributor, to drop a few pounds before training camp.

Phillips says he will be ready to practice -- perhaps once a day initially -- by training camp in August.

With Jones signed, the Giants now have six draft picks left to lock up in first-round defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, second-round defensive tackle Linval Joseph, fourth-round linebacker Phillip Dillard, fifth-round offensive lineman Mitch Petrus, sixth-round linebacker Adrian Tracy and seventh-round punter Matt Dodge.
