Former New York Jets defensive end Marques Douglas, an unrestricted free agent, signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract Friday with the Miami Dolphins, according to a league source.

It was widely speculated that the Jets would re-sign Douglas, their fourth-leading tackler last season and a strong locker-room presence, but the team showed no interest.

The Dolphins wanted Douglas to help offset the loss of defensive end Phillip Merling, who is out for the season after recently tearing an Achilles' tendon.
