The New York Jets unveiled their 53-man roster on Saturday, followed by a conference call with general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
The first order of business was holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis and whether he would come to terms with the team before the Sept. 13 season opener. Tannenbaum said he couldn't get into specifics because of the two sides' confidentiality agreement.
"Darrelle's not here and we planned accordingly," Tannenbaum said. "We feel good about our depth at corner. We've got six guys we think can help us and that's the group we're going to be moving forward with."
Tannenbaum was asked about the decision to keep running back Joe McKnight, who struggled with conditioning and performance from the first day of the rookie minicamp, over a hard worker like Larry Taylor, a preseason fan favorite.
"With Joe, he was a little bit more inconsistent than we'd hoped in the preseason," Tannenbaum said. "But he's going to get an opportunity to be on the roster and we're going to go from there.
"As we've done in the past, I think our 45-man roster is going to look different week in and week out and there's going to be a number of spots that are going to be up for grabs in practice, and Joe's going to have to go out there and earn it."
Notable players who made the team were running backs Danny Woodhead and Chauncey Washington, and wide receiver David Clowney. One of the bubble players will need to be cut after the fourth game of the season, when Santonio Holmes will return to the roster after serving a suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Revis and quarterback Erik Ainge are on the reserve/did-not-report list.
The Jets will be able to add eight players to the practice squad. Tannenbaum did not rule out the possibility of any more moves, and said waiver claims are due Sunday at noon.
"We'll be here for quite a while tonight," Tannenbaum said.
A number of players were already cut Friday, and some of those names leaked out. Here's a sample: OLB Ricky Foley (acquired on waivers from the Seattle Seahawks), WR Larry Taylor, C Robby Felix, G Chet Teofilo, FB Jason Davis, DE Jason Lamb, DT Martin Tevaseu, LB Boris Lee, LB Brashton Satele, LB Tim Knicky, S Emanuel Cook and S Keith Fitzhugh.
On Thursday, coach Rex Ryan had said that linebacker Josh Mauga and safety Donovan Warren, both of whom sustained concussions in training camp, wouldn't make the team. The team also came to an injury settlement with Charlie Tanner, who hurt his knee.
