Sources: Darrelle Revis to play on MNF
After days of speculation, cornerback Darrelle Revis will indeed be back in the starting lineup Monday night when the New York Jets face the Minnesota Vikings at the New Meadowlands Stadium, two sources confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.
Revis, who missed 2½ games with a pulled hamstring, was cleared to play Thursday by the Jets' medical staff, but the decision ultimately belonged to him, coach Rex Ryan said. Late Sunday afternoon, Revis announced via his Twitter account that he's going to play.
Revis practiced all week and was listed as probable Saturday on the Jets' injury report, setting the stage for his return and his highly anticipated matchup against wide receiver Randy Moss.
It's unclear if Revis will be assigned to Moss on every play -- that always was the strategy when Moss played for the New England Patriots -- but the All-Pro corner will have a full-time role in the game. As far as the Jets were concerned, it was all-in or another week on the bench.
"With this injury, it's 100 percent [healthy] or it's a no-go," Revis said last week.
Revis' last play came in coverage against Moss in Week 2, a spectacular 34-yard touchdown reception from Tom Brady. Revis pulled up lame on the play, admitting afterward that the layoff from his summer-long contract holdout probably contributed to the injury.
Revis insisted there's "no revenge" on his mind, but he may have incited his rival by questioning Moss' effort in the second half of the Week 2 contest. Moss, in an interview with the Vikings Entertainment Network, fired back.
"I think he gets caught up a little bit with how he talks," Moss said of Revis. "I never said anything about him, good or bad. I still give him his respect, but he hasn't given me mine yet. Sooner or later, I'll get it."
Moss was traded last week by the Patriots, setting up the rematch two months earlier than expected. With Revis back in the lineup, the Jets will use Drew Coleman in the nickel role, with struggling rookie Kyle Wilson dropping to a dime role.
