FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery has been officially ruled out for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans with a torn left groin muscle. With Cotchery out, wide receiver Patrick Turner will be signed from the practice squad and active for the game.

"It was the right thing to do. I worked as hard as I could this week to give myself a chance to play for this game, but didn't make enough progress before this game," Cotchery said. "I'm going to continue to get my groin better and hopefully have a chance of playing next week."

Cotchery missed three straight days of practice after suffering the injury Sunday in the Jets 26-20 overtime win against the Browns.

During the portion of practice open to the media Friday, Cotchery caught a pass during position drills, but spent most of the time running routes mirroring the other receivers without catching any passes.

When the offense and defense gathered separately, Cotchery and defensive back Marquice Cole, who will miss the game as well with a hamstring injury, both spent time on an adjacent field doing stretching drills. They walked from end zone to end zone while doing a variety of stretches.

When the media portion ended, Cotchery said he did a lot of running, mostly straight ahead, with no cutting. He said his rehab has been helped by plenty of training on a treadmill and in water.

"Today was another huge step toward making it back on the field, I feel a lot better," Cotchery said. "There's no pain, there's still some sensitivity, getting rubs and all those things as far as treatment-wise, but those are the normal soreness from working hard."

Coach Rex Ryan was encouraged by what he saw from Cotchery, saying he was "looking pretty good."

"If we were playing the Super Bowl," Ryan said, "he'd be playing."

Turner, a third-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2009 draft, fills the Jets vacant spot on the active roster after the team waived defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert on Thursday. Turner was active for the Jets contest against the Dolphins on Sept. 26, but was later waived by the Jets before re-signing with the practice squad. He will be the No. 4 wide receiver Sunday behind Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Brad Smith.

"He's a big guy," Ryan said. "I like the way he's been practicing, he competes hard every day."

Defensive back Dwight Lowery will also miss Sunday's game with a concussion.
