NEWARK, N.J. -- The days of Martin Brodeur starting almost every night for the New Jersey Devils appear to be over.

Brodeur, the NHL's leader in regular-season wins and shutouts, was Johan Hedberg's backup for the second consecutive game on Thursday night when the Devils hosted the Philadelphia Flyers.

It was the first time since January 2004 that Brodeur dressed as a backup for two straight games.

Like the Devils, the 38-year-old Brodeur has struggled this season, going 5-18-1 with a 3.15 goals-against average in 27 games. He gave up three goals on seven shots in his last start against Carolina.

Brodeur missed seven games earlier this season because of a bruised elbow. His game has been subpar since his return.
