The New York Rangers have acquired Calgary Flames defenseman Tim Erixon and a fifth-round draft pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft for forward Roman Horak and two second-round draft picks in the 2011 draft, the team announced Wednesday. The Rangers have also signed Erixon to an entry-level deal.
"Tim is an outstanding young defenseman with good size and mobility," Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said in a news release. "He plays a complete, all-around game, and we feel he is an excellent addition to our developing, young defense corps."
Erixon, 20, is a native of Port Chester, N.Y., and the son of former Rangers forward Jan Erixon, who played exclusively with the Rangers from 1983-84 to 1992-93. The Rangers selected Jan Erixon in the second round of the 1981 draft and he scored 57 goals and recorded 159 assists with the Blueshirts.
Calgary selected Tim Erixon with the 23rd pick in the 2009 draft and he played 48 games with Skelleftea of the Swedish Elite League (SEL) this past season, scoring five goals and adding 19 assists. In 140 games in the SEL, he has 14 goals and 30 assists and 96 penalty minutes.
The Flames traded Erixon after they weren't able to come to terms with him on a contract.
"Once we realized that we were not going to be able to come to terms with Tim Erixon, we wanted to make sure we turned that pick into an asset," Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a release on the team's website. "We are excited to be able to get a player of Roman's caliber in addition to landing two second round picks in the upcoming draft."
Erixon also has experience on the international scene, winning the silver medal with Team Sweden at the 2011 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia. He also won a silver medal with Sweden at the 2009 World Junior Championships and a bronze medal with Sweden at the 2010 World Junior Championships.
Erixon joins a Rangers team with a young but deep defensive unit. Marc Staal and Dan Girardi are both signed to long-term deals, Ryan McDonagh is under contract, and Michael Sauer and Matt Gilroy are both restricted free agents. Michael Del Zotto, who spent the second half of the season in the AHL, has also shown promise.
The Flames receive the Rangers' fifth-round pick from the 2009 draft in the 19-year-old Horak, who played 64 games for the Chilliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League this past season, scoring 26 goals and tallying 52 assists.
