Yanks enter wild-card game in funk

New York finished with six losses in its last seven games and barely hung on to home field of tonight's game (8 p.m. ET on ESPN). Will the Yanks squash the concept of momentum or end a solid season unceremoniously?

The Jets worked out free-agent RB Travaris Cadet (Patriots), perhaps because they're concerned about Bilal Powell, who suffered a groin injury on Sunday. Cadet also has kickoff-returning experience, another unstable position. DE DeAngelo Tyson (Ravens) also worked out for the Jets.

Bills accuse Beckham of throwing punches

They say he did it after plays in the Giants' 24-10 win in Buffalo Sunday. LB Preston Brown said, "That's what he does. He'll get away it. He's the 'golden boy' of the league. He's on the cover of Madden. Sometimes, you get away with stuff like that." (The Buffalo News)

Can a ballplayer hear boos from beyond the grave? We pose that question in light of an obituary recently published in the Newark Star-Ledger for 85-year-old Helen Fowler of Cranford, N.J. The obit included this line: "Mrs. Fowler was a former member of the Cranford First Aid squad and a lifelong Yankees fan, with the exception of Alex Rodriguez."

Richmond joins Mullin's staff at St. John's

Two-thirds of the Warriors' Run TMC crew of the early '90s is now together at St. John's as Mitch Richmond has joined Chris Mullin's staff as a special assistant. Richmond has spent the past couple of seasons in the Kings' front office.

Player to watch: Alex Rodriguez

A-Rod revitalized his career with a 33-HR campaign in his first post-suspension action. Now he looks to get over his playoffs struggles. A-Rod's .187 slugging percentage in the playoffs since 2010 is the lowest for any player (min. 50 plate appearances).

Ellsbury said he told manager Joe Girardi he wants to play, but he seemed content with the manager's decision. Ellsbury is finishing the second season of a seven-year, $153 million contract.

Yankees All-Star setup man Dellin Betances struggled late in the season but that won't stop manager Joe Girardi from looking for six outs, if necessary, from his giant reliever. When I asked Girardi if he were comfortable going two innings in tonight's wild card game with Betances, Girardi said, "Absolutely."

Joe Girardi said he chose to play Gardner over Ellsbury because of Gardner's superior numbers vs lefties. But vs. Dallas Keuchel, Gardner is 0-for-4, Ellsbury 2-for-7. Girardi: "I mulled it over for two days. I'm the one who has to live with it."

Ellsbury benched for wild-card game

Jacoby Ellsbury is not in the starting lineup for tonight's game against the Astros. Brett Gardner will start in CF for the Yankees, with Chris Young playing LF and hitting second. Young has a .972 OPS against lefties this year and is 6-for-20 lifetime against tonight's starter Dallas Keuchel.
