Johan Santana has shoulder surgery

NEW YORK -- New York Mets left-hander Johan Santana underwent surgery Tuesday morning at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder.

Team doctor David Altchek performed the procedure. A day earlier, Birmingham, Ala.-based doctor James Andrews reviewed an MRI and concurred with the need for surgery.

The Mets hope for Santana to be able to contribute from Opening Day next season, although that's not guaranteed.
