John Whisenant is Liberty's new coach

NEW YORK -- Former Sacramento Monarchs coach and general manager John Whisenant was hired Tuesday to fill both roles for the New York Liberty.

Whisenant, who coached Sacramento to the WNBA championship in 2005, found himself suddenly out of a job when the Monarchs folded in November. He served as GM for seven years and was coach from 2004-06 and parts of the '03 and '09 seasons.
