Falcons coach Jim Mora wants Pro Bowl inside linebacker Keith Brooking to fill the big-play role at outside linebacker that Julian Peterson occupied in the defense that Mora has brought from the 49ers. Brooking doesn't have Peterson's range in coverage, but his speed and intensity should enable his transformation from a 100-tackle inside linebacker into a Peterson-like performer who can get seven sacks and a couple of interceptions. With Peterson expected to be a long holdout in San Francisco, don't be surprised to see Brooking beat out Peterson for a Pro Bowl spot at outside linebacker.

Jason Gildon's signing by the Bills was another indication general manager Tom Donahoe wants to fix the team's long turnover slump. The Bills have had league-low takeaway totals of 19 and 18 the past two seasons. No Bills safety has intercepted a pass in 43 games. Gildon should improve the Bills' pass rush as an outside linebacker and adds to Donahoe's acquisitions of experienced defensive playmakers such as Sam Adams, Takeo Spikes, Lawyer Milloy and Troy Vincent.

Tim Rattay has eased the 49ers' worries by making a remarkable comeback from groin surgery on May 11. Rattay is doing dropback drills and is on pace to be on the field next week doing seven-on-seven drills when training camp opens. Instead of missing two preseason games as planned, Rattay now is expected to miss just one.
