All eyes on Vick

Here is my look at some of the games, players and coaches for Week 14.

Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay should have its hands full with Michael Vick this weekend. The Bucs did beat Atlanta in their first meeting this season, and Vick got knocked out of that game with a shoulder injury. He threw only 12 passes in the loss, he was sacked three times, and more importantly, he ran the ball just once for one yard.

Simeon Rice
Simeon Rice and the Bucs have the challenge of stopping Michael Vick this Sunday.
Tampa Bay does everything right defensively. The Bucs do so many things and they do them all very well. They have four guys who can really rush the passer, and their cover guys are very good, and they all tackle well. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has been there for a long time, and he's had the same core of players -- Warren Sapp, who leads that push up the middle, Derrick Brooks and John Lynch. Simeon Rice is also having a good season for the Bucs.

That defense is going to play against a quarterback in Vick that they haven't played against much. As I noted before, he got hurt in the first meeting, so they haven't had to face him for a long period of time. You can have all of your defensive players in the right position -- and you'll find that Tampa Bay usually does -- but with his speed he can still get away from you and beat you. That's a big problem for any defense. It's one of those things where you want to contain him and you want to keep him under control, but you don't have anyone on your team that's as fast as he is. The thing you have to do is get him before he gets started and sometimes that's pretty tough to do.

I can see the Falcons' defense doing a pretty good job against the Bucs' offense. Atlanta's defense has improved since last season and a big reason why is because of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. He's done a good job with that unit.

This will be a good matchup if Vick can stay healthy and stay in the game and keep going at Tampa Bay's defense.

Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans
Tennessee's right behind Indianapolis in the AFC South standings, but the Titans beat the Colts in early November. Edgerrin James didn't play in that game for Indianapolis, however, because of an injury. His backup, at the time, missed the game, too.

It doesn't seem to matter a whole lot as to how Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair feels during the week. He just comes out on Sundays and seems to play very well. He missed his team's practices last week, but still had a great game against the New York Giants in Week 13.

The Titans are always a tough, physical team, and the Colts seem to be on a roll right now. Being on a roll now is the important thing, because this is the time that you make your run to the playoffs. You begin to get some separation from the other teams, and Indianapolis has started to do that. The Colts are playing a little better on defense under head coach Tony Dungy. They have Peyton Manning (who played his college football in the state of Tennessee) and Marvin Harrison, who is one of the best wide receivers in the game. Those two guys can stretch a defense and they can do some things if the offensive line can give Manning some time with their pass protection.

This is a game that will be won in the pits.

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots
Drew Bledsoe (11) and Tom Brady (12)
Tom Brady (right) got the better of Drew Bledsoe in their first meeting.
New England won the first meeting against Buffalo in Week Nine, and the Patriots didn't seem to have too much trouble shutting down the Bills and ex-Patriot Drew Bledsoe in that game.

Buffalo had a big home win against Miami last Sunday and it really needed that after kind of struggling since early November. The Bills had the passing and running games going in that win over the Dolphins.

New England comes into this matchup off of a long break after beating Detroit on Thanksgiving Day. The Patriots play three of their final four games at home and those three home games are against teams from their division.

Both of these teams are bunched up in the AFC East standings with Miami and the New York Jets, and that division needs to get some separation to it. Is it going to be the Patriots or the Dolphins or another team that pulls away in the last four weeks? Again, this is such an interesting time of the year with these division races, especially in the AFC. Teams have positioned themselves to make a run and now they just have to make that run. The team that wins this game is going to be one step closer to that.

Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers
San Diego beat Oakland in the first meeting on Oct. 20. LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 153 yards on 39 carries in that game, and his 19-yard run won it in overtime for the Chargers.

Both teams come into this game playing very well. The Raiders have dug themselves out of a hole after losing four games in a row, following a 4-0 start to their season. They come into San Diego with a four-game winning streak and they're playing with a lot of confidence right now.

They have those old heads in there, like Rich Gannon, Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Charlie Garner on offense and Rod Woodson, Bill Romanowski and Trace Armstrong on defense. Those guys are veteran players and they've seen it all and done it all. As Tim Brown was telling me the other day, "some of these guys, they just get closer to the playoffs and they just smell the playoffs and then they play at a higher level."

One thing about the Chargers is that they've been in big games, close games and overtime games. They've played in the tough ones and in the ones that come down to the end, and that's some great experience to have when you're coming into a game like this one on Sunday.

As a coach, you don't really like to be in the close games while they're going on, but after you get through them and you've won them, you know that that's a good experience for your team. You know that they can get in a tight situation, and they can get into a situation where they have to make a play or they're going to lose, and they make those plays and win.

That's the type of experience you need. San Diego isn't a team that's been there for a long time and has experience, so they're getting these experiences within this season.

Oakland has confidence because it's won a bunch in a row, and the Chargers have confidence because they know that they can beat the Raiders because they did do that the last time they played 'em.

Philadelphia Eagles at Seattle Seahawks
Andy Reid
Andy Reid has posted a 39-25 record in four years in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia's won three games in a row with three different starting quarterbacks. Head coach Andy Reid was an assistant to current Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren when Holmgren was in Green Bay. Reid fell off of Holmgren's coaching tree, and it's the student and the coach and all of those things in this game, but Reid has the best team.

Seahawks' quarterback Matt Hasselbeck (whose brother Tim is a backup quarterback for the Eagles) has been playing better of late and he's kind of starting to look like the player that Holmgren traded for from Green Bay early last year. Maybe Seattle's just starting to get ready for next year. The Seahawks aren't going to do anything playoff-wise this season, whereas Philadelphia has to get playoff-ready.

The biggest thing the Eagles have learned since Donovan McNabb got hurt almost three weeks ago is that they aren't a one-man team. For so long, everyone thought that they were just what Donovan McNabb did. If he played well, they won, and if he didn't, they lost. And if they ever lost him, they'd be done. But they've proven that if they don't have him, they can still win with other quarterbacks. And win with the running game and defense and special teams and all of the other things that are part of every game. And they've been doing those things very, very well in the last two games, and for the entire season.

Philadelphia's defense isn't an easy one for a quarterback to play against and Hasselbeck will have to be ready to face it. When you play against the Eagles, you better be able to handle the blitzes because that's what a Jim Johnson-coached defense is about. As Philadelphia's defensive coordinator, Johnson likes to give a quarterback a heavy dose of that, and even if you can handle it, he still gives you a heavy dose of it. That blitzing is a big part of the Eagles' defense.

Chicago Bears at Miami Dolphins (ABC, Monday, 9 p.m. ET)
This game is all about Miami. Chicago's had a tough season, and the Dolphins are trying to make a move between now and the start of the playoffs to get into the playoffs. If they're going to get in the playoffs, they have to get playoff-ready.

Jay Fiedler will start at quarterback for Miami on Monday night. He injured his thumb against Denver in mid-October and this will be his first start since that game. He did play last Sunday against Buffalo after Ray Lucas got hurt, and he completed five passes in nine attempts for 15 yards with one interception.

As I've said before, running back Ricky Williams just looks like a different guy since he's been with the Dolphins. He seems quicker and faster and he's coming off of three very good games in a row. He'll be a big part of what Miami does against the Bears.
