Seahawks, Cowboys shoring up defense

Now that the second week of preseason is over and young players have played a lot and usually teams look forward to the third week of the preseason to dress rehearse to see where their team really is. The fourth game of the preseason teams just try to get through healthy. In Week 2 we saw the Dallas Cowboys travel to the Seattle Seahawks. I know the Seahawks came in feeling pretty good about their offensive line, their quarterback is set in Matt Hasselbeck and the person they really wanted to see was their backup quarterback Seneca Wallace. In the first pre-season game he looked pretty good but on Monday night it was a different story. In the offseason Mike Holmgren tried to bring in a veteran quarterback when they lost their dependable backup, Trent Dilfer and tried to bring in Brad Johnson. So he had to promote the third string quarterback to be the backup. This game was a real test to see if Wallace could be that backup and he has a way to go on that. Their wide receivers are set with Darrell Jackson and Bobby Engram along with Alex Bannister, who is a wide receiver and return specialist. Jackson is set as their No. 1, but there are six guys who are competing for not only a spot on the roster, but to see if someone can compete with Engram as the second receiver. Those were the things the Seahawks were looking to get out of the game offensively. Defensively their starting middle linebacker is a second round draft choice out of the University of Southern California. He was held out of the first pre-season game because of a pulled hamstring. The Seahawks want him to take over the defense and in watching him on Monday night it didn't look like he did that. Therefore they have two more weeks to get him ready and that is going to be a tough thing. Seattle is a good offensive team, an average to below average defensive team and that is going to be where they have their problems. Tracy White and Jamie Sharper their other linebackers are going to have to really step up and play well. Dallas made a major change in their defensive scheme and are now playing a 3-4 defense. Bill Parcells has always been a 3-4 coach and when he took over the Dallas Cowboys they were a 4-3, so he lived with it for two years. The first year they were very good, but the second year they were not very good so he made the change to his defense. When you run a 3-4 defense it starts with the nose tackle, you have to have a big nose tackle and so he brought in Jason Ferguson from the New York Jets who hasn't played yet in the preseason. A 3-4 team also needs a rush outside linebacker and when Parcells was with the New York Giants that guy was Lawrence Taylor. Monday night it looked like he really found one in Demarcus Ware, the first of two first round draft picks the other being Marcus Spears, two defensive players who could end up playing side by side. Ware looked like he could be something special. In addition to Ferguson, Spears is also hurt and that enabled some of the young defensive lineman like Chris Canty, their fourth round draft choice, Jay Ratliff and Thomas Johnson to get some good playing time and I was impressed with all of them. Had Spears and Ferguson been able to play those guys wouldn't have seen as much time but as a result of that time I think they are going to make the team and are going to be contributors. The Cowboys still need a safety and I don't know that Keith Davis is the answer. Anthony Henry is an improvement at cornerback which means the secondary is set with the exception of Davis. Justin Beriault a sixth round draft choice, safety out of Ball State, impressed me with his toughness. I watched him in practice and his knee was all taped up and was limping all over the place you could see he just has instinct and is a hitter and I could see him making this team as a sixth or seventh defensive back and special teams player. Offensively, Drew Bledsoe is going to be their starter and in Week 1 Tony Romo was their second string with Drew Henson was their third string. In Week 2 Henson was the second string and Romo was the third and in both games I felt like Romo played better than Henson so I would say that Romo is in the process of winning that job. The Cowboys are going to use a lot of two tight ends so I can see them keeping four maybe even five tight ends on the roster depending on whether they decide to keep a fullback or not. They are going to be a running team with Julius Jones and they have brought in a veteran backup in Anthony Thomas as a little bit of insurance.
