Szabo was Patriots' volunteer assistant

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Steve Szabo was hired as the Buffalo Bills' defensive backs coach Tuesday after a season as a volunteer
assistant with the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

Szabo has 34 years of coaching experience, including nine,
1994-02, as the Jacksonville Jaguars' linebackers coach. He spent
the previous 25 years with college teams, including stints as an
assistant at Syracuse, Ohio State and Boston College.

Szabo joins new head coach Mike Mularkey's staff. He replaces
safeties coach Steve Jackson, who left to join the Washington Redskins last month, and cornerbacks coach Pat Thomas, who was not
retained by the Bills.

Mularkey's staff is all but complete, depending on whether he
hires a quarterbacks coach. Former Cincinnati and Tampa Bay head
coach Sam Wyche is being considered for that job.
