Arizona also adds Shaun King, Ayanbadejo
Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals made their first major
additions through free agency Sunday, signing defensive end
Bertrand Berry, quarterback Shaun King and fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo.
Berry received a five-year contract that includes a reported $5 million signing bonus, and will be asked to improve the Cardinals' woeful pass rush. Arizona was last in the NFL in sacks in 2001-02, and only Houston and Chicago had fewer than the Cardinals' 21 sacks last season.
"We're excited for Bertrand Berry, defensive end, right end for us," Cardinals coach Dennis Green said after Berry signed the contract. "It's an ideal position because of the style of defense we're going to play."
King, who was 14-8 as a starter for Tampa Bay and led the Buccaneers to the NFC championship game as a rookie after the 1999 season, will compete for the starting job with Josh McCown and a possible draft pick. McCown was designated the starter by Green last month, and the Cardinals have the No. 3 pick in next month's draft.
King, a five-year veteran, was a backup with the Bucs last season. He appeared in three games and completed 15 of 22 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown. Overall, King was 368 of 654 for 4,064 yards, 26 TDs and 20 interceptions with the Buccaneers, who chose him in the second round in 1999.
Ayanbadejo, who left Miami to join the Cardinals, was expected to back up fullback James Hodgins, one of Arizona's top signees in 2003.
Ayanbadejo signed with Minnesota in 1997, and played in three games with the Vikings before signing with Baltimore for the final 12 games of the 1999 season. He started nine of 24 games with the Ravens through 2001, gaining 210 yards on 61 carries, and catching 47 passes for 289 yards and two TDs.
He started twice in 16 games with the Dolphins last season,
catching 12 passes for 53 yards.
