Veteran will again be No. 3 quarterback
Atlanta Falcons: Thirteen-year veteran quarterback Ty Detmer, an unrestricted free agent, has re-signed with the Falcons. Detmer, who has played for six different teams in his career, signed a one-year contract that included a league minimum base salary of $765,000.
Detmer, 37, did not see any action for the Falcons in the 2004 season, his first year with the club. He served as the "emergency" No. 3 quarterback in 15 of 16 games. The former Brigham Young star was signed principally to add a veteran presence to the depth chart and to aid Michael Vick in his transition to the West Coast offense.
For his career, Detmer has appeared in 53 games and started 25 of them. He has played in just one game since 2001 and has not thrown a regular-season pass in the past three years.
His career numbers include 546 completions in 946 attempts for 6,351 yards, with 34 touchdown passes, 35 interceptions and a 74.7 passer rating. His best season was in 1996, with Philadelphia, when Detmer started 11 games and threw for 2,911 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He has played for Green Bay (1992-95), Philadelphia (1996-97), San Francisco (1998), Cleveland (1999-2000), Detroit (2001-2003) and Atlanta (2004). Detmer projects as the No. 3 quarterback again, behind Vick and Matt Schaub.
Denver Broncos: Former Broncos tight end Clarence Kay was
arrested on domestic violence charges and faces a court date in
May.
Kay, 43, of Denver, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assault, disturbing the peace and destruction of private property. He was released on a $5,000 bond Friday.
Kay could not be reached for comment Sunday.
Kay was arrested 12 times between 1984, when he arrived in Denver, and June 2000, but half the charges were dismissed.
Since 1993, he has faced several charges including interfering with a police officer, violating a court order taken out by a former girlfriend and failing to display proof of insurance.
Kay played tight end for the Broncos from 1984 to 1992. He was once suspended for allegedly using cocaine.
He is scheduled to be in court May 3 on his latest arrest.
New York Giants: Starting fullback Jim Finn re-signed on Monday. Terms were not disclosed.
A New Jersey native, Finn played in all 16 games last season, helping Tiki Barber rush for a franchise-record 1,518 yards. He carried the ball just three times and had 12 catches for 115 yards.
"I couldn't think about playing anywhere else after playing at home the last two years," said Finn, who spent the first three years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts.
Miami Dolphins: Defensive tackle Dario Romero re-signed to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Romero, 26, played in 15 games with one start last season, registering 35 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks.
In three seasons with the Dolphins, Romero has collected 47 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks in 23 games.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Veteran offensive tackle Barrett Brooks agreed to remain with the Steelers, signing a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Brooks, who turns 33 on May 5, played in five games last season as a backup. He has spent his last two seasons with the Steelers.
A 1995 second-round pick of Philadelphia, Brooks also has played for Detroit and the New York Giants.
Houston Texans: The team re-signed long snapper Bryan Pittman, linebacker D.D. Acholonu and tight end Matt Murphy.
Pittman, a three-year veteran, has been the Texans' primary long snapper for the past two seasons. He made 150 snaps last year without an error.
Murphy is entering his third NFL season. He spent a year with the Detroit Lions before coming to Houston, playing mostly on special teams and a handful of offensive plays per game.
Acholonu spent most of last season on the Texans' practice squad before being activated for the final game, but didn't play.
Cleveland Browns: The Browns terminated guard Kelvin Garmon's contract Monday, dumping a player brought in by former coach Butch Davis last year to solidify Cleveland's weak offensive line.
Garmon injured his medial collateral, anterior cruciate and posterior ligaments in his right knee against Baltimore last November and missed half the season.
The signing of free agent guards Joe Andruzzi and Cosey Coleman this month meant Garmon at best would have been a backup. He had two years left on his contract with Cleveland.
The Browns also signed punter Derrick Frost and defensive back Dyshod Carter to one-year deals Monday.
Frost was inconsistent last season with a net average of 35.4 yards and will compete with free agent Kyle Richardson for the starting job.
