Detroit Lions: The team reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Ravens wide receiver Kevin Johnson, putting to rest speculation that it would use a third consecutive first-round draft pick on a wide receiver.

Johnson joins the Lions the same way Tai Streets did a year ago, as an insurance policy in case anything happens to wide receiver Charles Rogers, who has had major collarbone injuries during his first two seasons

The Johnson signing gives the Lions four solid receivers, with Rogers and Roy Williams as the starters and Az-Zahir Hakim in the slot.

Fox, Rogers re-sign: Safety Vernon Fox and offensive tackle Victor Rogers have been re-signed to one-year contracts. Both were restricted free agents.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Fox played in 14 games for Detroit in 2004, making nine special teams tackles. San Diego signed Fox as an undrafted free agent on April 26, 2002. In two seasons with the Chargers, he played in 28 games and had 45 tackles, one interception and five pass defenses.

The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Rogers enters his fourth season with the Lions. He was drafted by Detroit with its third selection of the seventh round (259th overall) in 2002.

Buffalo Bills: Quarterback Shane Matthews re-signed, accepting the role to be the team's third-stringer.

Matthews, a 12-year veteran, returns for his second season with Buffalo to work behind new starter J.P. Losman and recently signed backup Kelly Holcomb.

Matthews was all but out of football after being released by Cincinnati following the 2003 season when the Bills signed him in August after an injury sidelined Travis Brown. He made two mop-up appearances last season, and completed his first touchdown pass -- a 33-yarder to Lee Evans -- in two years in Buffalo's 41-7 win at San Francisco in December.

The Bills were particularly pleased with how Matthews helped mentor Losman through his rookie season.

Matthews has 22 starts in 28 NFL appearances, and also played for Chicago, Carolina and Washington.

Carolina Panthers: The team signed linebacker Chris Draft and punter Tom Rouen, a sign that Todd Sauerbrun's days with the team are likely coming to an end.

Sauerbrun, a two-time Pro Bowler, has been involved in a series of embarrassing on- and off-field incidents ranging from refusing to handle kicking duties unless he was paid for it to a drunk driving arrest, and his name recently came up as a player who allegedly obtained illegal steroids.

The Panthers have already signed punter Steve Cheek, and now they've added Rouen, a 12-year veteran who averaged 42 yards a punt last season for Seattle before a pulled hamstring ended his season after four games.

Draft, meanwhile, started 13 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season and had 81 tackles. He spent the past five seasons with the Falcons after they claimed him off waivers from San Francisco in 2000.

St. Louis Rams: The team re-signed backup quarterback Jamie Martin to a one-year contract.

The Rams also signed offensive guard Rex Tucker to a one-year deal.

Martin played in one game last year with St. Louis after being out of the NFL for more than a year, and probably will be the third-stringer behind Marc Bulger and Jeff Smoker. He was 16-for-30 for 188 yards last year.

Tucker started five games for the Chicago Bears before being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 13 with a hamstring injury. He missed the first seven games last year because of an elbow injury sustained in training camp.

Tucker has played in 35 career games with 27 starts, mostly at left guard. In 2001 he started all 16 games at left guard and was a Pro Bowl alternate.

Dallas Cowboys: Restricted free-agent fullback Darian Barnes has signed a one-year, $655,000 contract with the team.

Kicker Billy Cundiff also signed a one-year contract Wednesday, leaving the Cowboys with just two unsigned restricted free agents: cornerback Pete Hunter and offensive tackle Kurt Vollers. Backup quarterback Tony Romo, an exclusive rights free agent, is also unsigned.

Barnes, acquired from Tampa Bay in a draft-day trade last year, started 10 games at fullback. He rushed five times for 10 yards and caught 10 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown last season.

Houston Texans: The team signed defensive lineman Daleroy Stewart and receiver Reggie Swinton on Wednesday.

Stewart, a four-year veteran, spent three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the San Francisco 49ers last year. He made five tackles in five games in 2004.

Entering his fifth year, Swinton was a backup receiver and return specialist for the Detroit Lions the past two seasons. He played with the Cowboys his first two years in the NFL.

Swinton had 18 catches for 213 yards and one touchdown with Detroit in 2004. He also averaged 22.8 yards on kickoff returns and 6.5 yards on punt returns.
