Indianapolis Colts: Although the Colts are continuing their fact-finding efforts in the case of starting safety Mike Doss, who pleaded guilty on Monday to a pair of misdemeanor gun charges, general manager Bill Polian said the two-year veteran will be suspended for at least one regular-season game.

"We need to check details with the league office to make sure that we are in compliance with NFL policy," said Polian, who indicated that the suspension could end up being for more than one game, and noted an announcement on the sanctions against Doss should be make within a week.

A second-round pick in the 2003 draft, Doss will forfeit $22,352.94, or one-seventeenth of his base salary of $380,000 for 2005, for every game missed.

On Monday, Doss pleaded guilty in an Akron, Ohio, court to the charges, which resulted when he fired a gun into the air in a crowded nightclub. He received a fine and community service and his sentence was suspended. Doss still faces potential sanctions from the league under terms of the NFL personal conduct policy. But the team's actions could somewhat ameliorate any punitive measures by commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Doss, a former Ohio State standout, has started 24 games the last two seasons. The Colts open the 2005 campaign at Baltimore on Sept. 11.

Detroit Lions: Free agent interior offensive lineman Brock Gutierrez, a nine-year veteran, has signed with the Lions. Contract details were not immediately available, but the deal is believed to be for one season with a base salary of $665,000.

Gutierrez, 31, spent seven seasons with the Bengals before signing with the 49ers in 2003. The former Central Michigan standout, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 1996, has appeared in 98 games, with 23 starts.

He started a career-high 15 games and played well in 2004, when 49ers star center Jeremy Newberry was sidelined by a knee injury. In Detroit, Gutierrez will back up starting center Dominic Raiola and could also see some time at guard.

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles have signed defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall of Grand Valley (Mich.) State, the first of the team's two seventh-round picks in the '05 draft, to a four-year contract. The signing bonus was not yet available, but Marshall will receive standard minimum base salaries of $230,000 (for 2005), $310,000 (2006), $385,000 (2007) and $460,000 (2008).

Marshall is the first of the Eagles' 10 draft choices to reach a contract accord and is only the eighth pick leaguewide to have an agreement.

Expected to play nose tackle, the 6-feet-1, 333-pound Marshall played in 55 games, with 45 starts, in college. He finished his career with 230 tackles, including 69 tackles for losses, 26 sacks, six forced fumbles and seven recoveries. Marshall was the 247th player chosen overall.

Seattle Seahawks: Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren was back at practice Wednesday after taking a day off for medical reasons.

Holmgren went to a hospital late Monday afternoon after feeling discomfort in his chest, but tests showed no damage. He took Tuesday off, then returned to the team Wednesday during its three-day passing minicamp.

"I'm feeling better,'" Holmgren said after Wednesday's practice. "They did all the tests, and I think I'm in pretty good shape."

Holmgren underwent tests to make sure there was no heart damage, and is scheduled to see a doctor again Friday.

Seattle wide receiver Alex Bannister appeared to hurt his right clavicle at Wednesday's practice and was taken for further examination. Bannister missed nine games last season after breaking his right clavicle.
