EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State assistant coach Jim McElwain is leaving the program to become quarterbacks coach for the NFL's Oakland Raiders, the university announced Thursday.

McElwain spent the past three seasons at Michigan State, most recently as assistant head coach with responsibility for receivers and special teams.

He previously coached with Spartans head coach John L. Smith at Louisville.

McElwain joins the staff of Art Shell, who recently was named the Raiders' head coach.
